“So, how do I clean my furniture?”
After I deliver a piece of furniture back to their owner after restoration, this is the question I receive the most. Figured it was time to outline my simple approach in detail.
To maintain the beauty and longevity of your furniture, whether it’s wood or upholstery, a professional approach is essential. Professional furniture restoration techniques ensure that your furniture not only stays clean but also retains its value by keeping an intact finish.
In this guide, I’ll cover my best practices for cleaning different types of furniture.
Why Professional Furniture Restoration Matters
Before diving into the cleaning process, it’s important to understand why professional furniture restoration is essential. Furniture, especially antiques or high-quality pieces, requires more than a simple dusting or vacuuming. Over time, dirt, oils, and grime can build up, damaging materials and reducing the lifespan of your furniture.
Professional furniture restoration and maintenance involves careful cleaning, repair, and refinishing techniques that preserve and restore the original beauty of your items. These techniques are often more thorough than DIY methods, using specialized products and tools to preserve your furniture’s integrity.
Step 1: Assess the Condition of Your Furniture
Before cleaning, it’s crucial to assess the condition of the furniture to determine the best restoration approach.
Inspect for Damage
Look for signs of wear and tear such as scratches, dents, or stains. Some issues may require professional restoration rather than just cleaning. For instance, wood furniture might need refinishing or re-polishing if it has deep scratches, breakdown of its finish, or missing veneer.
Identify the Material
Different materials require different care methods. Is your furniture made of wood, fabric, leather, or metal? Each material—and the finish applied—responds differently to cleaning products and techniques, so knowing what you’re working with is key to achieving the best results.
Step 2: Clean Wood Furniture Carefully
Wooden furniture is what I love. When I look at wood furniture, I feel a sense of calm and ease… unless it’s dusty, dirty, or damaged. When it’s tended to with care, wood furniture can last centuries.
To clean and restore its luster, follow these professional methods:
Dusting and Vacuuming
Use a soft, lint-free cloth to dust the surface. For hard-to-reach places, a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment works wonders in removing dirt and debris from crevices without scratching the surface.
Deep Clean with Specialized Wood Cleaner
For a deeper clean, apply the right cleaner. I use Simple Green, diluted per the product’s specifications on the back label. It’s formulated to break down grime without damaging the finish. Avoid using regular household cleaners, as they can strip the wood’s natural oils and will often damage the finish.
Restoring Shine with Polishes and Waxes
After cleaning, you can restore shine (and protect the finish) by applying the right wood polish or furniture wax. Personally, I don’t use wax often. I like Oz Polish, made by Mohawk, because it cleans and polishes, leaving your wooden furniture with a wax-like and rich look. It’s an amazing product that I recommend anytime a customer asks how to clean their furniture.
Step 3: Preventive Measures for Preserving Furniture
Once your furniture is cleaned and restored, it’s important to take steps to keep it in excellent condition.
Regular Maintenance via Dusting, Cleaning, and Polishing
Routine dusting and cleaning can prevent the accumulation of dirt and grime, making your furniture easier to maintain, but too much of anything is a bad thing. There’s no hard and fast rule about how often to clean or polish furniture. Dusting every few weeks, cleaning once monthly, and polishing every 3 to 6 months seems reasonable, but trust your own judgement.
Professional Restoration Services
For heavily worn or antique pieces, periodic professional restoration services can help prolong the life of your furniture. A professional furniture restoration specialist, like us, can provide cleaning, repairs, and refinishing that go beyond what’s possible with basic maintenance.

Cleaning and maintaining furniture professionally is essential for preserving its beauty and function. By following the right cleaning methods, using specialized products, and seeking professional help when needed, you can restore and maintain the elegance of your furniture—no matter how old it is.
