The Best Paint Sprayers and Paint Supplies for Furniture

In the furniture refinishing world, nothing stirs up stronger opinions than paint. Some, regardless of the quality of the wood beneath, paint every piece of furniture they see. Some, regardless of the quality of the wood beneath, refuse to paint any piece of furniture.

I land in the middle. Paint has its place. As an accent. As full coverage. I actually like painting furniture. If my aim is to help people feel something when they look at their furniture, then why would I cut myself off from a useful and artful tool?

Below you’ll find a condensed list of the best furniture-related paint sprayers and supplies, based on my years of experience painting furniture. If you’re goal is a smooth, professional finish, look no further.

Best Paint Sprayer

Buy: HomeRight Super Finish Max Paint Sprayer

It’s rare to find a technology that both improves time efficiency and product quality. Spraying paint does just that. Sprayed paint lays flat and avoids the dreaded brush marks of the amateur. It’s also infinitely faster than painting by brush or roller. And once you get the hang of it, the clean up doesn’t take too long. Homeright’s SuperFinish Max makes the whole process as simple as possible. Easy to clean. Adjustable spray nozzles. Incredible price. This is how I paint my projects. Professionally. Without the need for an air compressor.

Best Furniture Repair Paint

Buy: SEISSO Furniture Repair Kit

For three months after I purchased this kit, it sat unused on a shelf in my workshop. Then, I thought, “Yes, I could patch that veneer repair… or I could paint it?” Since that thought, I haven’t looked back, painting small repairs across a variety of pieces. The paint kit is also perfect for painting over unsightly finishing nails. It’s a must have for any shop. I use this a couple times per month as I do in-home furniture repairs.

Best Furniture-Specific Paint Roller

Buy: Foampro 4″ Fine Finish Roller

Brush marks. I hate brush marks. Rolling paint, along with the right paint, ensures you’ll never find a brush mark on your piece. For trim (or an entire piece if you’d like), along with drawer tops and sides, you’ll need a brush roller. Occasionally, I’ll ditch the sprayer and roll a piece entirely. Using fine foam rollers helps avoid the textured roll appearance that people often want for their walls… which is not so good for furniture.

Best Painter’s Tape for Furniture

Buy: Scotch Delicate Surface Tape

An excellent product that solved a troublesome issue: painter’s tape residue sticking to my lacquered surfaces. This product allows you to more easily two-tone any surface, without leaving behind a tape residue to clean up. It can also be applies over the top of paint, which helps you create a two-tone painted look for furniture.

Tack Cloth

Buy: S&F Stead Tack Cloth – 6 Pack

Where would I be without tack cloth? Probably without much business. Tack cloth is awesomely helpful. Between coats, I usually sand the paint with 220 grit paper, particularly before the final coat. After the sanding, I wipe the surface with a wet rag. BUT THIS ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH. Follow with the tack cloth and your surface will be dust-free, the only way to achieve a professional finish.
